Does pursuing perfection make you a coward?

At first glance, it’s a harsh suggestion … yet when you dig a little deeper, as the video I’m about to share with you does, it’s difficult to argue.

But more on that video in a moment (from one of the Niestat bros).

First, my thoughts on perfection and my own personal pursuit.

For starters, I’m not a perfectionist. I am far too happy to let good enough be good enough … BUT,  I am rather particular with what I do and I like it to be a certain way 🧹

Neat. Tidy. Finished. In place.

So perfection, no, not a big deal. But a rough and ready document, for instance, with no formatting or headers or all that jazz…?

My oh my, I’d lose my mind 🧠

And that is a problem because it leads me to waste time when time needn’t be wasted. This is where the idea of cowardice comes in, so let’s get into that video — although first, a few somewhat related pieces from the [no hustle] community 👇

The Illusion of Perfectionis perfection even real 🤔

Slow or Steady — Does It Still Apply?the pursuit of perfection impacts time, and do we have time to waste in this modern, fast-paced world?

3 actions to take this week

📺 watch this → the video that inspired today’s edition, and the one that calls you a coward (don’t shoot the messenger) 🔫

💪 DO THISWhat’s Your Relationship with Perfection — reflect on this today and get clear on where you stand on that spectrum talked about in the video above.

this week’s featured book

The Comfort Zone by Kristen Butler — what I love about this book is how it gives permission to accept, embrace, and appreciate COMFORT.

This, to me, is one of the big reasons we pursue perfection.

Not because we want it, but because we hope achieving it will help us feel adequate and worthy. But here’s the thing… you already are ❤️

🎙️ pass the mic

If you’re at all interested in your health, Sol Orwell (and the work he does at Examine.com) should be on your radar.

But even if health is unimportant to you, following Sol and his nuggets of wisdom (often shared on Facebook) is worth your time because he talks about business and life in a way that goes against the grain of most of the “advice” out there.

I learn a lot from him, and hope you do too 🙏

🎤 drop the mic

I really hope you take the time to watch the video about (from Van) 👆👆

As I watched it, I found myself wondering about “perfection” and my relationship with it; how I too often waste time trying to tidy something up at a stage when it being “neat and tidy” simply doesn’t matter.

how I want to be at the finish line NOW, so work harder than I need to…

how I want to feel like I’ve completed the process, so think and dwell on it…

In some way, all these center around this notion of perfection and how we pursue excellence. No right or wrong way per se, but it is important to appreciate your relationship with it.

I hope you reflect on that today, using the above exercise as a guide 🙏

Thanks for reading, I’d love to hear from you and your own outlook on perfection and everything like it — above all, thank you for being YOU 👏
